KODAMA A supernatural SWAT Samurai action film. Arthur, the new captain of an elite SWAT Samurai team, leads a rescue mission to recover his father from the spirit world where an evil Kodama and a dangerous shapeshifting Fox Spirit hold him hostage. Kodama is a father and son story about the moment of realization and acceptance when one realizes that their parents are only human and also make mistakes. Arthur enters the film with an idealized image of his father which is challenged by what he discovers in the spirit world. Set in the US, one of the goals of Kodama is to showcase English speaking Asian American faces as serious lead action hero potentials. With the rise of movies like Shang-Chi and Crazy Rich Asians, we want to continue expanding the legacy of Asian American cinema. Additionally, we are saturated with mythological stories from the Greeks, Romans and other western civilizations but there is relatively little content exploring the rich and varied world of Japanese mythology—particularly in the live-action space. Kodama is an opportunity to introduce and modernize these stories in a unique and exciting way. By mashing elegant traditional Japanese Samurai armor with present day American tactical SWAT aesthetics, we personify the cultural amalgamation associated with the modern Asian American experience. The Kitsune, or Fox Spirit in Japanese folklore is a shapeshifting spirit who often impersonates a young woman. Often described as "tricksters", and often will pretend to be someone their victim knows personally. The Fox Spirit plays a crucial role in the film by impersonating one of our SWAT Samurai heroes by utilizing her supernatural shapeshifting abilities. The Fox Spirit will revert to her original form once her cover is blown. This will expose her ancient yet fierce appearance including the iconic fox tail that pokes out from under her cloak. Impossible Objects is a world building lab founded by filmmaker Joe Sill and will be the visual effects powerhouse that will bring the fantastical world of Kodama to life in post production. Cutting-edge motion capture and tracking hardware will be utilized in a tried and true VFX pipeline specific to the company. These techniques will allow us to do seamless set extensions as well as fully CG shots that will be indistinguishable with the live action footage. By working with Impossible Objects, Kodama will be participating in the next generation of how films will be made. Kodama's action scenes will feature jaw dropping choreography and character based beats in the action design. This will showcase the proficiency of this elite team of Samurai and push the story forward through movement. Pre-visualization and sufficient time on set to get the action just right is of paramount importance. Collaborating with the best of the best action design team and stunt coordinator will elevate the film into a stylish martial arts extravaganza. Vintage anamorphic lenses with heavy distortion and 35mm film grain / halation plus atmospheric lighting will draw the viewer into this world. Rapid yet tightly controlled camera movement and intentional framing will showcase the action in wide shots, in order to better give the audience a clear sense of geography during the chaos of an action sequence. The score will feature distorted textual synth interwoven with experimental orchestral phrases all to make up an intense perpetual rhythm crafted to exude the feeling of dread as our characters venture further into the caverns of the mysterious spirit world.
