(27 Feb 1998) T/I: 10:44:31 A French court on Friday (27/2) sentenced writer Roger Garaudy to pay a 120,000-franc (20,000-dollar) fine for a book denying the existence of Nazi gas chambers. It has been a controversial case, with emotions running high on both sides, and there were ugly scenes outside the court after the verdict, with rival factions clashing. The 84-year-old Garaudy had been charged with denying crimes against humanity in his 1996 book "Founding Myths of Israeli Policy", and faced a one-year jail term and a 300,000-franc fine. In the book Garaudy referred to the holocaust as a "myth." But he denied he was an anti-Semite, saying he was simply "anti-Zionist."
