SPECIAL THANKS TO @ImWalde for finding this recording, collaborating in the translation, and giving suggestions for the video. "Sometime in the 1910s, Columbia Records recorded several Filipino singers as part of their new series of recordings in Asia and the Far East. Among these is a recording of the Philippine National Anthem under the title of "Marcha Filipina." It was sung by a certain C. Gachalian accompanied by a guitar." -cited from "Early Lyrics of the Philippine National Anthem (1899-1920)" by Im Walde vesteel (2022) Additional Notes In mainstream historical knowledge, the first Tagalog translations of the national anthem was only written during the 1930s, with an official Pilipino version "O Sintang Lupa" only being officialized by 1948. However, this recording proves the existence of Tagalog lyrics to the Philippine national anthem as early as the 1910s. Although there are similarities to the more famous Palma's 1899 Spanish, it doesn't seem to be a direct translation. While the recording is dated to the 1910's, it is possible (although not yet conclusively proven) that these lyrics were already being sung during the Revolution and the Philippine-American War. While the most famous set of lyrics during that time was the Spanish lyrics by Jose Palma in 1899, there are other unofficial lyrics circulating during that time. Whatever it is, the certain thing is that this is currently the oldest surviving record of any version of the Philippine National Anthem. An older Tagalog* recording by Filipina soprano Maria Carpena was made earlier, although it is currently lost. ERRATUM: Maria Capena’s 1908 recording is in Tagalog, not Spanish. Apologies for the mistake. --------------- SOURCES Audio: "Marcha Filipina", sung by C. Gachalian with guitar accompaniment.
