STORY-LINE: Iraq says it has started urgent work needed to stabilize the Ctesiphon's main architectural wonder: the Arch of Ctesiphon or Taq Kasra. The arch, the widest single-span vault of brickwork in the world, was first built in the 3rd century B.C. and rebuilt in the 6th century A.D. by the Sasanian King Chosroes I. It has seen years of neglect and conflicts that put the landmark on the verge of collapse. Recently, some parts of the archway started falling. Iraq's Ministry of Culture, Tourism and Antiquities and the International alliance for the protection of heritage in conflict areas (ALIPH) announced plans to protect the endangered arc. "We are starting the first stage by reinforcing the arch and initiating studies about the soil. The site is close to the river and therefore there are risks of water leakage to its foundations," said Hassan Nadhem, Iraqi Minister of Culture, Tourism and Antiquities, during a visit to the site on Wednesday. The arch, located about 35 kilometers (22 miles) south of Baghdad in the town of Salman Pak, is 30 meters high and 25 meters wide and the walls buttressing each side are about seven meters thick.
