Horchata in Valencia and in Alicante, Spain, is a traditional drink known for its refreshing qualities, especially during the hot summer months. This beverage, often referred to as "Horchata de Chufa," is made from tiger nuts (or chufas in Spanish), water, and sugar. Tiger nuts have a sweet, nutty flavor reminiscent of almonds or coconut, but they are neither nuts nor grains; they are tubers. Horchata is typically made by grinding nuts or rice and then mixing the resulting powder with water and sweeteners such as sugar or cinnamon. Note horchata from Valencia is not the same as in Mexico (made from rice). Horchata is deeply rooted in the region's culinary history, brought to Spain by the Moors during the 11th century, with its production centered around Valencia. The drink is not only refreshing but also considered healthy, rich in nutrients like iron, potassium, and antioxidants. A farton is a traditional Spanish pastry originating from the Valencian town of Alboraya. It is an elongated, sweet bun typically glazed with sugar, designed to be dipped into horchata, making it a popular choice for the afternoon snack known as "merienda."
