If there were any one luxury watch brand brand synonymous with lume, it would be Panerai. The watches explode in the darkness. Here are several watches with significant differences. You'll see a sandwich dial, printed dial, true patina lume, simulated patina lume and a conventional Panerai dial versus a vintage evocative California style Panerai dial. Lets first start with one of the best known references of this selection; the Pam 25. In addition to being a dive watch and blessed with more lume than most, this is also an original tridium dial. This is the difference between a true patina dial (this model) versus a simulated patina dial. Once charged and the lights go out, you can see what happens with true patina; it fades. The replacement bezel on this watch from a last service is the only bit of luminova remaining. Up next is the PAM 629 California dial, patina style dial lume with big bold Luminor 1950 case in 47mm. Once charged up and lights turned off, you can see this watch turns into a torch when the lights go out. This is what simulated patina lume looks like in the dark. Next, take a look at the exotic PAM 516 Equation of Time, limited edition of only 200 pieces from 2015. This is a piece you don't see too often. Like all Panerai watches, it is one you will easily see when you turn off the lights. The broad, 48mm case allows Panerai to expand the dial to include more complex sub registers and extend hands and indices. The 44mm Betterini case can be considered the scaled down version of the 516. This is the original case shape and size released in the early 1990s when Panerai first started producing watches for the public. The watch is an easy watch to read in the dark. Superluminova will look as good as it does here in 20-30 years time. Looking at a more contempory watch, take a look at the PAM 663, recalling vintage watches not just in patina lume but simulated patina dial, strap and strap stitching. The watch is rich in color and doesn't forget where it comes from with an explosive in the dark glow. With this piece, you get a larger case size allowing for larger indices and hands.
