Taking the audience on a journey from tragedy close to home, to the back roads of Kenya, and back to Australia, Ruth’s inspiring, motivational and reflective speech teaches a valuable lesson about how good things can emerge from devastating periods in life, if only we learn to embrace the things that ‘suck’. . Ruth Rowlands is a professional ‘people person’. A career in the ‘people industry’ for 25 years has taken Ruth from a small town on the north-west coast of Tasmania across the globe to remote communities in the northern region of Kenya where she worked and lived. Ruth works as a manager for Advocacy Tasmania, specialising in mental health, alcohol and other drugs. In 2010 Ruth co-founded a not for profit organisation named Tandum, registered as an NGO in Kenya. Tandum partners with people in rural regions of Kenya to provide sustainable solutions to empower locals to improve health, education and community connections. www.tandum.org This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community.
