Abstract Although a core function of higher education, the research and knowledge production aspect is less pronounced in emerging higher education systems. This talk will focus on knowledge production in the Muslim-majority research systems globally. It will delineate the significant trends and potential future research directions. In today’s modern-day metrics, Muslim-majority systems can best be positioned as emerging systems. Large bibliometrics data indicate that the contributions of Muslim-majority research systems to global science are still at a modest level; however, there are visible trends in the increase in the quantity and scientific influence. Muslim-majority research systems vary in size and publication patterns. Also, trends indicate significant changes in their collaboration patterns; specifically, the major Muslim-majority systems tend to collaborate increasingly with China, as the US is losing its scientific influence over them. Research-area-based analyses provide further nuances and demonstrate that collaborations with China tend to focus on STEM-related areas. Bio Yusuf Ikbal Oldac is an Assistant Professor based at Hong Kong Lingnan University. He is also a Core Centre Fellow at the Institute of Policy Studies of the same institution. Yusuf has conducted his doctoral training at the University of Oxford with a full scholarship from the Oxford Centre for Islamic Studies. His research focuses on international and comparative higher education in the context of globalisation. #highereducation #research #development #muslim #investment #education #trend #agenda #collaboration #competition
