December 20, 1972: CBS 30th Street Studio, New York City, New York (Studio) Ludwig van Beethoven's Piano Sonata No. 23, colloquially known as the Appassionata, was written in 1804-1805. It is considered one of the most important piano sonatas; also most tempestuous and technically challenging until the twenty-ninth piano sonata. Horowitz (as he himself admitted) is not generally a good interpreter of Beethoven. But at least, in this Sonata, it's different; It seems he really understands something here. His unique but not excessive expression makes everything Appassionata without damaging the original value of this work. Good dynamic contrast, a singing melody, and, above all, a non-urgent tempo! He never rushes; It is proof of confidence that can show everything even at an intentional slow tempo. 00:00 Allegro assai 09:37 Andante con moto 15:32 Allegro ma non troppo – Presto
