When visiting the castle, I truly expected my emotions to be all over the place. I thought I’d come out feeling angry, much like I did the first time I watched Roots. Surprisingly, though, I left feeling okay. I’m not sure if it was the tour guide’s casual, matter-of-fact tone or if the lack of detail about how the slaves were treated played a part, but something left me feeling detached. Next time I visit Ghana, I plan to go to Cape Coast Castle instead not because I’m looking to feel angry, but because I expected a deeper and more thorough narrative than what I experienced this time. Maybe others felt differently, but for me, it just didn’t resonate as I had expected. In my opinion, the tour guide didn’t provide the best experience. My sister visited last year, and from what I saw of her tour, her guide was much more passionate and thorough. If you decide to visit the castle and happen to get this particular guide, I’d suggest looking for another one to make the most of your visit. Just my personal take!
