But over the years, the power has gone up, and the number of driven wheels has remained - until now. The M3 Competition xDrive is the first-ever four-wheel drive M3, and to see if it stacks up on track, we pitched it against the purest, simplest driving machine of all - a Caterham. Here in 360R guise, the British featherweight produces 180bhp, giving it a power-to-weight ratio advantage over the BMW.
