For reasons that confound to this day, General Motors banned all of its divisions from putting engines larger than 400 cubic inches of displacement in mid-size cars. This ban began in 1963 and wasn't lifted until 1970. Astute observers will note that this was the heart of the classic muscle car era and what it meant was that while Fords had 428 Cobra Jets and Mopars were packing 440s and 426s, Chevy was limited to 396s for its performance models. Thanks For Watching ❤️ DON'T Forget To Subscribe To Our Channel ✅ Alongside the engine ban, GM also prohibited its brands from participating in racing sports, which was another noodle-scratcher. AMC, Dodge, Ford, and Plymouth were all developing cars to destroy NHRA and NASCAR, which they then made available to the public. Meanwhile, Chevy was stuck twiddling their thumbs and had to watch as every other car on the streets was blowing the doors off their otherwise cool rides. Despite these ridiculous corporate rules, Chevy did manage to make some pretty awesome muscle cars in the classic era. They made the best of the rules they were working under and even found some creative ways to skirt GM's arbitrary mandates. The result was some of the most killer performance vehicles that were both fast and rare, becoming prized collectibles.
