The second half of the 20th century was a time of fierce and complicated wars of decolonization across Africa.. These struggles were about more than just political independence. They often tore communities apart, pitting neighbors and even family members against each other in battles of identity, faith, and ideology. Among all these wars, Algeria’s fight for independence from French colonial rule stands out as one of the most brutal and significant. At the time, Algeria was more than just another colony; it was the crown jewel of the French empire, as vital to France as India had once been to Britain. But unlike most colonies, Algeria had a large European settler population known as the colons, who saw Algeria as their home. For them, Algeria was France. That made the war especially bitter. Years of repression, land theft, and inequality had lit a fire that could not be put out. The desire for independence had become unstoppable. The New York Times would later call it “the cruelest colonial war of the modern epoch.” Over eight long years, an estimated 1.5 million Algerians lost their lives. The conflict was marked by guerrilla warfare and atrocities on all sides. The violence was so intense that it shook France itself, helping to bring down the Fourth Republic and plunging the country into political turmoil.
