They were called villotte, Italian folk songs, that were arranged for small ensemble. They were differentiated according to their regions of origin, e.g. villotte alla paduana (Padua) or villotte alla napoletane (Naples) etc. This particular song mentions the playing of a viola (viola da braccio?) and violone (bass viola da gamba?) - references to street musicians in a city festival. The singers finish each verse with notes from the standard Renaissance scale ("fa mi la mi so la"), which in this instance also has a double meaning ("Do that only to me"). The "instruments" (viola and violone) are therefore likely specific body parts of two lovers. In this latest rendition, I created a more legato effect, rebalanced the voices, added "natural" dynamics, doubled the voices with lute on verse 2 and enhanced the reverb & echo. The voice simulations were created using the MAIKA Spanish language Vocaloid. The instrumental lines were generated using the iPhone app Music Studio 2. ------------------- Italian text: Vorrei che tu cantassi una canzone, quando mi stai sonando la viola.
