So instead of a misdemeanor charge, there will be a fine to pay. The law also removes criminal penalties for possession of less than 2 ounces of weed and creates a process where certain folks with past marijuana convictions can have their records cleaned. According to the New York Times, nearly 160,000 people with petty weed convictions will have them expunged from their record. "Communities of color have been disproportionately impacted by laws governing marijuana for far too long, and today we are ending this injustice once and for all."Cuomo stated last month after signing the legislation. "By providing individuals who have suffered the consequences of an unfair marijuana conviction with a path to have their records expunged and by reducing draconian penalties, we are taking a critical step forward in addressing a broken and discriminator criminal injustice process." he continued. Cuomo having high hopes that marijuana would be legalized for recreational use, has to go back to the drawing board because the bill to legalize marijuana didn't go through.
