In this video we discuss how to calculate the number of calories from a can or bottle of beer. We go through an example for a can of beer, adding up the calories from alcohol, carbohydrates and protein Transcript/notes To calculate the number of calories from alcohol in beer, we first have to calculate the number of grams of alcohol in the beverage. The formula to calculate the number of grams of alcohol in beer, or any alcoholic beverage is, grams of alcohol equals the number of ounces of the alcoholic beverage, times 29.5735, times the percentage of alcohol, times .789. Then we take the result from the previous formula and multiply it times 7 calories per gram, as there are 7 calories per gram for alcohol. In the formula, the constant 29.5735 is a conversion, as 1 ounce equals 29.5735 milliliters. The next variable in the formula, the percentage of alcohol is listed on the label for the particular beer. The average is about 5% for beer. And the last constant in the formula, .789 is the density of alcohol, which basically means how closely its atoms are packed together. As an example, let’s look at a 12 ounce can of beer that has 4.6% alcohol, 13.9 grams of carbs, 1.2 grams of protein and no fat. The grams of alcohol equals, 12 times 29.5735 times 4.6%, which is .046, times .789, and this calculates to 12.88 grams of alcohol rounded off. Next we multiply 12.88 grams times 7 calories per gram, which equals 90.16 calories from alcohol. For the total calories from the can of beer, we need to add in the calories from carbs and protein, which both provide 4 calories per gram. So, 13.9 times 4, gives us 55.6 calories from carbs and 1.2 times 4, gives us 4.8 calories from protein. Now we can add them up, 90.16 plus 55.6 plus 4.8 equals 150.56 total calories from this can of beer.
