Here is the last of the “street rags” by Euday Bowman - the unpublished “6th Street Rag” - copyrighted by the composer in 1914. Its stand alone inclusion in “Rags and Ragtime” is something of anomaly in the listings, for if you have spent some time with Bowman’s rags, you will realize very quickly that “6th Street Rag” is merely an unpublished earlier draft of Bowman’s “Petticoat Lane Rag” - which also received a separate entry in the listings. However, “6th Street Rag” is in the key of D-flat, whereas “Petticoat Lane” was transposed down a half step to C major for publication. I suspect Bowman himself would have played it in D-flat and the transposition was to encourage sheet music sales. I debated whether it made sense to make a separate video for “6th Street Rag”, given that I have already learned “Petticoat Lane Rag” for this series. I suspect that Jasen & Tichenor may not have had access to the “6th Street Rag” manuscript when compiling the list of Euday Bowman rags and they would not have included it separately if they had known - more comments on this on a video description to follow. However, I have decided to err on the side of pedantic completeness when it comes to my performances. Kansas City’s “Sixth Street” north of Petticoat Lane (near 11th and 12th Street) was forever changed by the construction of a freeway during the mid-20th century. Some on the Internet speculate that this might have been a politically motivated decision with the specific goal of diluting Italian-American political power in the city through gerrymandering. I have not researched it enough to have my own opinion on the matter, but it would not surprise me. They tried building two freeways around my house, but my own Sicilian power remains concentrated and full strength.
