Airdate: January 13, 1968 Here is part 1 of the episode announcing the winners of the ’67 Dance Contest (not to be confused with the ’67 Swing Dance Contest from Spring of ‘67). Tune in this Saturday to meet all of the finalists and see the winning couple announced. Am I shamelessly milking this for all it’s worth by making this a cliffhanger?…probably. :) But it’s a really fun watch, even if you already know who won 😉 Piecing it all together from your comments and the episodes I have (I have posted videos of all of these contests), here is how the late 60’s dance contests went. Please feel free to correct me if I’m wrong – 1967 Swing Dance Contest – Feb.- April 1967: The winners were, as mentioned, Frank Vanderpuil and Judy Michaud. Grand Prize: Magnavox color TV sets. Song: “You Got To Me” by Neil Diamond. The video of all of the finalists competing, provided by Judy Michaud through Don Sanuskar, is the most popular video I’ve ever posted with, currently, over 6 million views. 1967 Dance Contest (the one shown here) - November-December 1967: Grand Prize: 1968 Volkswagen “Deluxe Sedans” (aka Beetles). Song: “In and Out of Love” by Diana Ross & the Supremes (also, “Windy” by the Association in the December 30, 1967 episode) 1968 Dance Contest - May- June 1968. This was the year they began having the locals compete with dancers from around the country. Winners: Lester and Leslie Tipton from Detroit, MI. Song: “Tighten Up” by Archie Bell & the Drells. Grand Prize: 1968 Pontiacs 1969 Dance Contest – Summer ’69 – Song: Too Busy Thinking About My Baby by Marvin Gaye. The winning couple was Dietrich Nelson & DaVita Willians from Oklahoma City. Grand Prize – 1969 Pontiacs 1970 Dance Contest – May- July 1970 – Winners were Bandstand regulars Steven Rice and Linda Gibson. Song: “Up Around the Bend” by CCR. Grand Prize: Trip to Hawaii. Dancing Today: I spotted Kathy Greenwalt getting her face painted with Maureen Cohen behind her in the bleachers. Frank Vanderpuil & Judy Michaud (of course), Sue Rose, Frank Herrera, Famous Hooks & Jenny Nichols, and Don Sanuskar & Roni Menacker briefly on the lower riser and at 5:44. “Darlin’” enters the Billboard Hot 100 at #39 today and will peak at #19 in 3 weeks (a catchy earworm that might drive you to madness, Bazinga! lol) Thank you for watching and see on you on Saturday!
