This was produced as part of Central Illinois' On-Line Broadcast Museum at dougquick.com. Throughout the duopoly of WICS and WICD across mid-Illinois (both NBC), both stations were part of a small network of two stations, with WICS being the originating station. Each station originated its own local newscast. Commercials were often simulcast on both stations, with local commercials and station IDs from WICS-Springfield being covered up with local commercials and the ID of WICD-Champaign. In 1983, most stations were still playing commercials and film presentations live from the film chain. That was the situation with the WICS film chain airing a 16mm print, multi-reel film of the pilot show of "Charlie's Angels." The video camera in the film chain was of such poor quality it included artifacts "burning in" to the tube and leaving a ghost trail behind any movement within a scene. The switching from the movie to the commercial sets was quite clumsy and awkward. Each time the source changed, the synch would be lost, allowing the video to "flip." The operator even cut off the closing credits, bailing out of the movie before it was complete. This video was recorded from WICD in August of 1983. The digital era has improved many of the technical problems visible in this video. I didn't include the entire video to avoid any copyright challenges, along with the editing of the Michael Jackson Pepsi commercial.
