Greening Steyning made the video using equipment from the ‘Bio Box’ we borrowed from the ‘Weald to Waves’ Project. Amongst the treasure trove of wildlife surveying kit they lent us was a camera trap, which activates automatically when motion is detected. We set this up in a number of gardens around the area and recorded what goes on, right under our noses, without us thinking or knowing about it. Then we used the footage to create a film to show you who we share the space around us with. We have called it ‘Meet the Neighbours’. It covers a day, from dawn to dusk and into the night, and captures a range of creatures who live side by side with us, from the heron that lands by a pond in someone’s garden in the early morning to fox cubs who come out to play at night in front of someone else’s patio. Some of the creatures are beautiful. Others are creepy. And some are just special. The video is a reminder that we are not the only creatures on this planet. We are part of something bigger; we belong to the same web of life as those wild things we rub shoulders with every day. Without them we would not survive. For us to thrive, they must thrive as well. The message is clear; look after your neighbours. Give them space and a helping hand.
