Part 1 - Monday, April 7 (1 PM EDT) Speakers Importance of the Hepatitis B Birth Dose in the United States | Dr. John Ward, Coalition for Global Hepatitis Elimination Hepatitis B vaccination at birth is critical to protecting all babies from hepatitis B and liver disease. This early administration is crucial as newborns exposed to the hepatitis B virus (HBV) are at a high risk of developing chronic hepatitis B, which can lead to serious liver diseases in adulthood, i.e. liver cancer. In the United States, hepatitis B vaccination at birth has been recommended since 1991. The Coalition for Global Hepatitis Elimination hosted this two-part webinar to highlight how state and city immunization programs and local clinicians work with families to ensure timely hepatitis B birth dose vaccination of all newborns in the United States. Key topics discussed: 1. The role of health departments in providing case management to ensure routine hepatitis B birth dose; 2. Case studies demonstrating the need for universal hepatitis B birth dose vaccination for all newborns, such as when the maternal serologic status was not available at birth or transcription errors; 3. The receptivity of mothers to the vaccination of newborns, including questions raised and answered; 4. How hepatitis B birth dose is implemented with other services delivered post-partum (such as Vitamin K, RSV monoclonal antibody, and testing for genetic disorders).
