The goal of this project is to reduce safety concerns, address environmental concerns and improve the visitor experience at the Bronx Zoo. Development of these three core issues has fallen short resulting in unwanted congestion, underdeveloped areas and poor infrastructure. The Bronx Zoo struggles to have a singular defining main entrance. There are currently four entrances to the Bronx Zoo; Bronx River Gate, Asia Gate, Southern Boulevard Gate and the Fordham Road Gate. The Fordham Road entrance is used strictly for staff and VIP guests of the Bronx Zoo. The Southern Boulevard entrance services visitors who travel by car or charter bus. The Bronx River Entrance of the Bronx Zoo is serviced directly by the Bronxdale Parking Lot and Overflow Parking Lot. The Jungle World Road runs between the Bronxdale Entrance and Asia parking lots. This road runs across the width of the Bronx Zoo because only pedestrians can get to Asia World via the Asia Parking Lot. Traffic concerns continue to plague the Bronx River Gate due to vehicular traffic backs up onto the Bronx River Parkway. While the path of travel for Bronx Zoo service vehicles, delivery trucks as well as passenger vehicles must not be removed. Pedestrian traffic can and should be redirected not only for efficiency but for safety as well. Other considerations for this project include the visitor arrival experience. Unlike other zoos, the Bronx Zoo lacks a main entrance building. This impacts the visitor experience, visitor conservation efforts as well as revenue for the zoo. A proposal for a new visitor center at the Bronx Zoo’s Bronx River Entrance will also be included as a part of this proposal. To my family, friends, coaches, mentors and professors. I dedicate this work to you and the support you have given me throughout my time in school. Thank you for walking with me on this journey, without you, it would not have been possible.
