Jonathan Tan performs his original piano arrangement of Thượng Tiến Lên Ba Ngôi (Offering to the Trinity) by Nguyễn Quang Hưng (1955-2012) as the prelude on Trinity Sunday, 30 May 2021 at the Church of Our Saviour/La Iglesia de Nuestro Salvador in Mount Auburn, Cincinnati, Ohio, USA. COPYRIGHT PERMISSION: Streamed under OneLicense A-709077. All rights reserved. BIOGRAPHICAL INFORMATION: A superb musician, singer, and prolific hymn writer with at least 49 hymns under his pen, Nguyễn Quang Hưng wrote this beautiful offertory hymn to the Trinity when he was just 20 years old in 1975 under the original title "Thượng Tiến Gia-vê" (Offering to YHWH) as a prayer of faith, trust, and surrender to God as South Vietnam was descending into the darkness of chaos, destruction, and death when it fell to North Vietnam. Nguyễn Quang Hưng was born on 10 September 1955 and was baptized Dominic by his devout Catholic parents. From 1968 to 1975 he studied at the local seminary in the Diocese of Long Xuyên. While in seminary, he began composing hymns at the age of 17. In 1981, he left Vietnam for the United States and lived in California, Connecticut and Georgia. He passed away in Atlanta, GA on 28 May 2012 leaving behind a rich legacy of post-Vatican II Vietnamese Catholic hymnody, as well as mentoring many Vietnamese choirs in Vietnam and the United States.
