The African American Diabetic and Heart Patient// I had the opportunity to sit down & chat with NP Colleague, Devyn Nixon, MSN, ARNP, FNP-C. She works in cardiology & since it’s Black History Month as well as American Heart Month, we thought it would be great to discuss the African American diabetic & heart patient. The diabetic patient is 2-3x more at risk for stroke, MI, & sudden death compared to those without diabetes. The African American diabetic has an even higher incidence of macrovascular disease than their Caucasian counterparts.
