Automatic Grade Crossing Warning Devices provide excellent warning to motorists and make railroading safer, but not when they don't work. Thus, when crossing protection dies, and no flagman is present, trains must Stop-and-Flag, a process that dictates the train comes to a full stop, and the conductor flag down traffic to a stop before continuing over the grade crossing. In this example of the procedure, we have a massive CSX Q335, with several locomotives on account of the original leader failing enroute and stalling on Salem Hill. But no matter the power or length, stopping to flag is a must. The crossing is not activating due to heavy trackwork in the area, as crews prepare a new signal system to be cutover. Therefor, this 10,000 ton, 12,000 foot train must stop and provide the manual crossing protection. First, the train comes to a stop a safe distance from the crossing (as 6 major road intersections remain blocked behind them). The conductor alights the train, setting up three fusees before the engineer walks the 12,000 foot beast across 20 feet of Century avenue. Finally, with the conductor aboard, the train continues west to enter Wyoming Yard. Speed limits here are ten miles per hour due to curvature, but the monstrous train combined with the momentary pause leaves some crossings nearby closed for over 10 minutes. But hey, that's about 200 truckloads worth of freight rolling by!
