Treatment,Tunnels and a Train journey.

Summit tunnel constructed between 1838 and 1841. When built it was the longest railway tunnel in the world. Opened 1 march 1841. 20th Dec 1984 the tunnel fire happened, no deaths but it was closed for extensive repairs after a train derailed carrying thousands of gallons of petrol which caught fire, sending flames hundreds of feet into the air via the ventilation shafts. it burnt for days. It reopened on the 19th August 1985. The tunnel is Grade 2 listed. It is approx 1.6 miles long. Horseshoe shop and was designed by Thomas Longbridge Gooch. 41 workers lost their lives during construction and it cost £251,000. Gooch was the engineer for Manchester and Leeds Railway Company on behalf of George Stephenson. Source, Wikipedia, Rochdale online.
