The legendary Budapest String Quartet existed from 1917-1967. The line-up of the Budapest String Quartet: Emil Hauser (1893-1978), first violin from 1917-1932; Imre Pogany (1893-1975), second violin from 1920-1927; István Ipolyi (1886-1955), viola from 1917-1936; Harry Son (1880-1942), cello from 1917-1930. Harry Son (actually Henri Mozes Son) left the Budapest String Quartet in 1930 after a conflict. He emigrated to Palestine, and decided to return to Rotterdam just before World War II. He died in the Auschwitz-Monowitz concentration camp on 1 October 1942. Neither Mozart attached the name ‘hunting quartet’ to his composition, nor his publisher. The matrix numbers show that the adagio caused some problems before everyone was satisfied.
