Today I decided to line up a few to see how they stacked up against one another. I tried to only include bottles that you can find on store shelves now and at varying price points. While you won’t see “rarer” BIBs (Bottled-in Bonds) like William Heaven Hill, Master’s Keep, or even Col E.H. Taylors, I think everyone can find some solid options here. Please feel free to leave your favorite BIBs in the comments, as I hope to follow this one up with a “Part 2” somewhere down the road. Oh, and I have to say that all these bottles were purchased in 2024, so while older versions may have been much better (looking at you JTS Brown), this is where we’re at and I believe these taste descriptions are close to what you can expect picking them up here in 2025. As for what makes a whiskey “Bonded” or “Bottled-in-Bond,” the designation refers to the 1897 Bottled-in-Bond Act, which aimed to ensure quality and consistency in whiskey production. It accomplished this by requiring it to follow these rules. It had to be distilled in the same distilling season: Meaning the whiskey must be distilled within a single six-month period (either “Spring” January to June or “Fall” July to December). Distilled at a single distillery. Aged for at least four years in a federally bonded warehouse. And bottled at 100 proof (50% ABV). The label must indicate the distillery where it was distilled and, if different, where it was bottled. Jack Daniel’s Bonded is priced around $30 JTS Brown BIB is around $18 Benchmark Bonded is around $18 Evan Williams BIB is around $25 Early Times BIB is around $23 (come in a 1 Liter) Old Grand Dad BIB is around $27 Old Forester 1897 BIB is around $48 Henry McKenna 10 Year BIB is around $60 (and is a single barrel – so it may fluctuate a little in taste from bottle to bottle) As of April 2025, my current bottle count is over 3,000. I am a Certified Specialist of Spirits and have also been accredited by the Tequila Regulatory Council (CRT). I've been actively collecting for three decades and what started as a small basic home bar has transformed (with the help and understanding of my wonderful wife) into this collection and career. Speaking of my career, I’m super proud to announce that my “Saints Alley “Nobleman” Rye Whiskey was named “Best American Rye” at the 2024 World Whisky Awards (Batch 4 arrived in Total Wines the last week of November)! But don’t forget that our other Bourbons have also won multiple big awards and are on Total Wine shelves now! Our Flagship Port & Cognac received a Double Platinum at Fred Minnick's 2024 Ascot Awards, and "The Herald” - our Armagnac finished Bourbon - took Double Gold at the Whiskies of the World competition! Given my decades of consumer/reviewer experience, you know I’m working hard to continue bringing you great whiskeys that I'm proud of as a collector, reviewer & blender! Thank you for watching & please remember to drink responsibly. Cheers!
