"Silencing the self" Dr. Netta Weinstein keynote @ SDT2019

Keynote by Dr. Netta Weinstein, Cardiff University, UK Silencing the self: Autonomy and the dynamics of self-expression and inhibition Autonomy support is a powerful catalyst for self-expression. One recent review of studies indicates that autonomy support is consistently associated with individuals feeling more authentic and genuine in relationships. This talk will explore the dynamic of self-expression and self-inhibition and examine how they play out across cultures, relying on data from Turkey, Iran, Poland, Peru, Saudi Arabia, the US, and the UK to do so. Further, I will focus on the role of autonomy support in self-silencing and self-expression in an organizational context where the opportunity for self-expression is particularly important, namely, policing within the UK. The talk will expand on this and consider groups for whom self-expression may be especially challenging when they receive lower support on the whole (e.g., women, LGBT+ [lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender]). I will further focus on how these individuals experience the support for autonomy. The talk will close with a discussion of promising future research to provide a better understanding of the precursors to, and importance of, self-expression.
