What does this mean? That this natural tendency of the skin is to be acidic. When we talk about pH we are talking about whether a product or a surface or a solution is more acidic or more alkaline. When it is 7 it is supposed to be neutral water has a pH of 7, then you have anything above seven is supposed to be alkaline. Most of our soaps are alkaline and anything which is lower than seven is supposed to be acidic. The skin has an acidic pH. What does this mean? When we use a soap or excessive detergents to remove the excessive oil from the skin or when we use harsh cleanser we are making the acidic pH of the skin more alkaline. This makes it more difficult for the skin to heal itself and it tends to be damaged more easily it tends to age more easily. So what is the ideal pH and how do we measure the pH. So we have pH testing litmus papers which are available which you can test or by applying it on the skin. Not very easily available. However if you are able to go to a dermatologist who has this test available you can ask them to get it that second how do you know it is out of think if you using the wrong kind of product for your skin. Skin tends to go more dry more irritated more red more flaky. Then you tell your doctor and they will change your cleanser as well as moisturizer to a more ph balanced cleanser a soap free product so that the skin is able to feel it. When we talk about pH mostly dermatologist don't go around measuring the pH of the skin but they will be able to tell you about the pH of the product that you're using there are many of these products which are now coming which are labeled physiological pH that means they are able to balance the pH in the skin. So if you feel that your skin is extremely sensitive very prone to flaking especially after you change skincare product then look for products which are hypoallergenic and have physiological pH . It could be a cleanser it could be a shampoo it could be a moisturizer or a conditioner and then problem will be solved.
