Traditionally healthcare practitioners have continued their learning and maintained competence by meeting with peers, participating in case discussions, publishing papers and attending conferences. Borders in Europe are mostly open, so the increasing mobility of healthcare professionals (HCPs) and patients also comes into play, and there are wide variations in medical training, competencies and skills, and the needs and diversity of practice are evolving. To add to the diversity of practice, the growth of the internet and wearable technologies has stimulated a proliferation of vehicles for learning. Thus, as part of their life-long learning, today’s physicians not only read journals and attend conference, they also participate in webcasts, take online courses, download apps, and are active on social media. Who in this changing environment is providing continuing medical education? Are they educators? Physicians? Institutions and Societies? Industry? How can standards and independence be maintained in the face of diversity? Who is accountable for the quality of education HCPS are receiving? And how do we ensure the quality of CME in this changing world?
