Pièce Concertante No. 1 (Repliement), for piano and orchestra (1961) Mario Bernardi, piano The CBC Symphony Orchestra Walter Susskind Since 1956 Mr. Papineau-Couture has written four "pièces concertantes"—works for various medium-sized orchestral groups with soloists, in which he has introduced novel ideas of formal shape. The constructional device in the Pièce Concertante No. 1 is indicated in its subtitle, Repliement (Folding-Back). The strange tone-cluster-like themes exposed by the piano in 3/2 at the beginning are carried by soloist and orchestra through a series of reductions in meter. The piano then plays a long cadenza which, halfway through, starts to reverse itself or "fold back." The remainder of the piece is a note-for-note reversal of what has already been heard, right back to the piano's opening clusters. Though highly schematic, the work makes a distinct artistic effect through the unusual rhythms and pronounced melodic profile of its themes. The "folding-back" offers a strange listening experience akin to those movies which show the life-cycle of a plant accelerated from a season to ten minutes. [Monaural—ML 5921] Art by Wanda Koop
