In this episode of Muscular Dystrophy Warrior, I sit down with my former Spanish and translation professor from Fresno State, Professor Arballo, to discuss something that deeply impacts families navigating disability — language access in healthcare and education. As someone living with muscular dystrophy — and someone who has interpreted for my mom at doctor appointments — this topic is personal to me. I’ve seen firsthand how important it is for families to fully understand medical recommendations, treatment plans, and educational rights. This conversation is not about politics. It’s about access. We discuss: • The difference between translation and interpretation • Why accuracy matters in medical settings • The responsibility interpreters carry • The role of interpretation in IEP meetings • How language barriers can impact special education services • The power of bilingual advocacy In the disability community, we come from different races, cultures, backgrounds, and political views. But at the end of the day, we all want the same things: Respect. Inclusion. Accessibility. Language should never be a barrier to understanding healthcare or education — especially when someone’s health or future is involved. If you or your family are navigating disability and language barriers, this conversation is for you. #MuscularDystrophyWarrior #DisabilityAdvocacy #InclusionMatters #AccessibilityForAll #BilingualAdvocacy #IEPRights
