Ali-Aye-Ligang is celebrated by the Mising community in Assam as a vibrant agricultural, spring festival marking the start of the sowing season in Fagun (February-March). It signifies the "first sowing of seeds" to ensure a bountiful harvest, honoring nature and ancestral traditions through, music, dance (Gumrag), and community feasts. Key aspects of the celebration include: • Significance: It is the most important festival for the Mising tribe, rooted in their agrarian lifestyle. • The Name: "Ali" means seeds, "Aye" means fruits, and "Ligang" means sowing. • Rituals: The festival often begins on a Wednesday with the ceremonial, symbolic sowing of seeds by the head of the family. • Cultural Activities: Participants perform the Gumrag dance, a rhythmic dance representing agricultural activities, accompanied by traditional music. • Food and Drink: A key feature is the consumption of Purang Apin (boiled rice wrapped in leaves), along with special rice beer called Poro Apong. • Purpose: It is a time for community bonding, inviting blessings from ancestral spirits and the goddess of fertility (Kine Nane) for a productive, prosperous year. The festival represents a deep, harmonious connection with nature, emphasizing traditional agricultural practices.
