Jane Hedengren, a Brigham Young-bound senior at Timpview High in Utah, was presented the Gatorade National Girls Track and Field Player of the Year award by North Rockland High of New York graduate and adidas professional competitor Katelyn Tuohy, the most decorated student-athlete in the history of the Gatorade awards program. Hedengren, 18, joined Tuohy (2017-18) in becoming only the second female distance runner in U.S. prep history to win Nike Cross Nationals, as well as receiving both the Gatorade National Cross Country Player of the Year and Gatorade National Track and Field Player of the Year, all in the same school year. Hedengren also became the first prep athlete from Utah, regardless of gender, to be selected Gatorade National Track and Field Player of the Year, after setting United States Under-20 records in the mile, 3,000 meters, 2-mile and 5,000. Her 9:17.75 performance in the 2-mile race June 8 at the Brooks PR Invitational in Washington was the fastest all-time World Under-20 outdoor effort. Hedengren also ran 4:23.50 in the mile June 5 at the HOKA Festival of Miles in Missouri, 8:40.03 in the 3,000 on June 21 at Nike Outdoor Nationals at Hayward Field in Oregon, along with 14:57.93 in the 5,000 on April 17 at the Bryan Clay Invitational at Azusa Pacific University in California.
