Folium Movement (2019), for solo clarinet, is the third piece in a cycle exploring plants Morten Lohmann Sønderskov Jensen, clarinet Lil Lacy, composition About the piece: Folium is a leaf. This piece explores a leaf on a micro level, from when it unfolds the first time and starts to breathe through photosynthesis. Then through different textural observations and interpretations of structure and consistency of the leaf. Imagining the sound in the changes of weather; wind, sun, rain and snow around the leaf. And at last to the final decomposing of the leaf. Interpreted through movements, sound and silence. About 'folium': The leaf is the most vital part of many plants. Like a receiver, antenna or a solar panel, it absorbs the energy-rich rays of sunlight during the day. The light is an essential ingredient in one of the most important biological processes in the world, photosynthesis. Put it simply, photosynthesis is the way plants make sugar from light, water and CO2. Without plants and other organisms carrying out this central process, there would be no oxygen and no food, and nature as we know it would cease to be. Actually, every major food chain in nature starts with photosynthesis. Plants are uniquely able to capture the photons, small particles that make up the sunlight, setting this life inducing process in motion. The leaves, being the area of action for photosynthesis, can take many peculiar forms. Some are colorfully decorated, some are full of holes, some are barely visible by the naked eye, and some can reach several meters in length. And although leaves are important, not all plants have them. On cacti, photosynthesis is happening in the stem and the leaves are reduced to sharp menacing spikes to protect the sugars and water stored in the center. Other desert plants never really produce leaves, thus reducing the surface area and the loss of water. On the other hand, many plants have leaves complex enough to follow the angle of the sun in real time during the day. In this way, the plant performs its own dance through a slow, continuous and barely visibly folium movement. description by biologist Michael Straarup Nielsen Klavs Kehlet Hansen, audio and video production Recorded in the Chamber Hall in Musikhuset, Aarhus, Denmark, 2020 The piece and recording has been supported by Dansk Komponistforening, DJBFA, SNYK, Aarhus Unge Tonekunstnere, Vejle Kommunes Kulturpulje, Århus Kommune, Københavns Kommune, Axel Muusfeldts Fond and Knud Højgaards Fond.
