Nako is a high-altitude Himalayan village located at approximately 3,662 metres (12,014 ft) in the Kinnaur district of Himachal Pradesh, India. Situated near the Indo-Tibetan border in the Hangrang Valley, it is renowned for the sacred Nako Lake and ancient Buddhist heritage. A serene, remote settlement often considered the last major village in Kinnaur before entering Spiti Valley. It is characterized by traditional mud and stone houses and is set against the backdrop of Reo Purgyal, Himachal Pradesh's highest peak. Key Attractions & Heritage:---- The village is centered around cultural and spiritual landmarks that reflect its deep Tibetan Buddhist roots. 1.Nako Lake:--A high-altitude lake surrounded by willow and poplar trees. It is a pilgrimage site for Buddhists and freezes completely in winter, allowing for ice skating. 2.Nako Monastery (Gompa):-- One of the oldest monasteries in the region, dating back to the 11th century. It houses ancient stucco images, murals, and significant Buddhist temples. 3.Saint Padmasambhava's Footprint:--A rock near the village bears an impression believed to be the footprint of the saint Padmasambhava (Guru Rinpoche), who is said to have meditated in nearby caves. 4.Reo Purgyal Views:-- The village offers intimidating views of the highest mountain in Himachal Pradesh, which towers at 6,816 metres (22,362 ft) Practical Travel Information Visiting Nako requires specific planning due to its remote location and proximity to the international border. Permits:-- Foreign tourists must obtain an Inner Line Permit (ILP) to visit or stay in Nako. These are available in Reckong Peo, Kaza, or Shimla. Indian nationals do not require this permit. Best Time to Visit:-- The ideal window is from May to October. Winter travel is difficult as roads can be closed due to heavy snow. Connectivity:-- Visitors should expect limited mobile connectivity and occasional electricity outages due to the village's isolation. How to Reach:-- The nearest major hub is Shimla (approx. 300 km away).
