How Building an Inclusive Workplace for Autistic Employees Benefits Everyone

The Simons Foundation’s Autism in the Workplace program aims to increase employment opportunities for autistic individuals and promote neurodiversity. With 70–90 percent of autistic adults in the U.S. unemployed or underemployed, the program focuses on inclusive hiring, early career internships, and outreach. To share our model, we launched a grant program in 2023, funding three organizations to create inclusive internships. Grants cover training, recruitment, intern salaries, and support. These efforts expand opportunities for autistic talent and help employers build inclusive practices. The Simons Foundation seeks to build community with like-minded employers interested in starting or who already have programs supporting autistic talent.
