It's the time of the year again :D SMRT turns 38 Years this year, let's look back a little to it's history. Started in 1982,when Trans Island (or also known as TIBS) was first formed in order to challenge the likes of Singapore Bus Services (SBS) & a bit of City Shuttle Service (CSS,which later joined tgt with TIBS counterpart). 1983 then, operation started with only 2 humble routes,160(present day 980) & 167.TIBS grew afterwards with more buses and even bringing in the legendary Bendy Buses into Singapore. They dominate nearly every corner of the Island, even making SBS struggle to keep up(even with double Deckers from 1986 onwards 💀). SBB(then the parent of both TIBS & CSS) was brought over by SMRT and by 2004,TIBS was rebranded to SMRT Buses, while CSS continued until it's farewell in 2007. While TIBS was still on its introductions period,The Transport heads (basically LTA in the past) had a vision that,by 1992,our roads will be jam packed. They did consider an All Bus System (similar to what Brisbane did) but was deemed that,it won't really work and that,a Bus & Rail System would do the trick. At first,a lot of people had doubts about it, mainly due to the financial cost and even an MRT debate in 1980. The argument continued until one man,the Late Mr Ong Teng Choeng (who later became the Singapore's 5th President), fought for the green light for the MRT to happen as he knew, the system would worked. The green light was given and years later The day where the most important history of Singapore was made, 7 November 1987,the first MRT was finally opened between Yio Chu Kang and Toa Payoh, marking the beginning of our MRT history and welp, that's how the story goes, with different generations & stories to tell 😊~ SMRT will forever the operator who I will always be fond with and yea, thanks for always bringing the best of our childhood!! Happy 38 Years SMRT Crop/Trains & 42 Years Anniversary SMRT Buses ✨!!!
