A month ago Chris and I changed out the #3 cylinder due to having low compression. A couple weeks after, we took it out for a test flight. As we began the ‘run up’ procedure, we noticed the left mag dropped the rpm’s lower than allowed. We taxied back and took the cowling off and cleaned the lower plugs. Thinking that they may have fowled after sitting for a while, as the lower plugs tend to do being that gravity pushes oil down towards them. We put everything back together, ran it up to 2500 rpm’s to burn any excess on the plugs off. Everything went perfect during the mags test and we went flying, there were no mishaps. Today ( 5th of Jan ‘26) Chris and I were going to fly from KFMY to KPGD to pick up some parts for another airplane. Again, as I ran the mags test, it showed the same issue. So this time I cleaned all the plugs hoping that’s all the issue was, but no. I spoke with Chris, as he had to drive to Punta Gorda to grab those parts, and he told me that the engine wasn’t acting properly and would need a complete overhaul. It was burning through too much oil in a short period of time and that it was close to its time for an overhaul anyway. I said, well I guess it was a sign to not go flying today and it just wasn’t meant to be. #olightworld #aviation #mechanic
