• Jongs (樁 / zhuāng) are tall platforms, poles, or pedestals used in lion dance performances. • They can be made of steel, concrete, or wood, and usually stand 1–3 meters high (sometimes higher for big competitions). • The tops are flat and about the size of a dinner plate, requiring balance, precision, and trust between the two performers inside the lion. 🔹 Purpose of Jongs in Lion Dance 1. Showcase Skill & Acrobatics • Performing on jongs turns the lion dance into a highly acrobatic art form. • The lion leaps, balances, crouches, and springs from pole to pole, creating the illusion of a powerful and agile creature. 2. Symbolism of Overcoming Obstacles • The jongs represent mountains, cliffs, or challenges. • When the lion climbs and leaps across them, it symbolizes strength, courage, and the ability to overcome difficulties in life. 3. Modern Evolution of Tradition • Traditional lion dances were performed mostly on the ground or small benches. • The jong style became popular in Hong Kong and Malaysia in the late 20th century, turning lion dance into a competitive sport. 🔹 Types of Jongs • Single Poles – Lions jump from pole to pole. • Bridge Jongs – Poles are connected by beams or platforms, symbolizing crossing rivers or valleys. • High Rises – Tall jongs used for championship competitions (up to 3m–4m high). 🔹 What it Means to the Audience Watching a lion on jongs is not just entertainment—it feels like witnessing: • The lion’s bravery leaping across impossible gaps. • The team’s trust (the head and tail performers must move in perfect unison). • The spirit of resilience, teaching that no obstacle is too high to climb. Note: I didn’t get all because we were in the Moon Fest Celebrations but here are some clubs I’ve managed to record. Enjoy ☺️
