Eight NBA players. Eight lifetime bans. Thirty-five years of drug addiction destroying basketball careers. This is the complete history of every NBA player banned for life under the league's anti-drug policy, from John Drew in 1986 to Jalen Harris in 2021. John Drew was the first. A two-time All-Star who averaged 20.7 points per game. In 1986, David Stern made him the first player ever banned under the NBA's new drug policy. Drew ended up driving a taxi in Houston. He died in 2022 at age 67. Micheal Ray Richardson came one month later. "Sugar" was a four-time All-Star, the only player besides Michael Jordan to lead the league in both assists and steals in the same season. His third positive cocaine test in three years ended his NBA career forever. Roy Tarpley is the only player in NBA history banned for life TWICE. The 1988 Sixth Man of the Year couldn't stay clean. First ban in 1991. Reinstated. Banned again in 1995. Permanently. Richard Dumas made the NBA Finals with Phoenix in 1993. Three years later, crack cocaine ended his career. He was 25 years old. Chris Andersen, "The Birdman," is the only player on this list who came back. Banned in 2006, reinstated in 2008, won an NBA championship with Miami in 2013. O.J. Mayo was the third overall pick in 2008. Painkiller abuse got him banned in 2016. He never played in the NBA again. Tyreke Evans won Rookie of the Year in 2010, averaging 20.1 points per game. In 2019, drugs of abuse earned him a lifetime disqualification. Jalen Harris is the most recent. After just 13 NBA games, the 2021 rookie was disqualified for violating the anti-drug program. His NBA career lasted 71 days.
