We get to run an SLT train with 6 carriages (SLT 2602, train 6842). Sorry, I forgot to add the video introduction. Train Drivers View on the sprinter service from the shunt tracks in Gouda Goverwelle to Den Haag CS. Short video this time. It’s November the 15th round about 2 in the afternoon. The weather is typical Dutch during an autumn day. Cloudy with a change of rain and not really warm for the time of the year. As said we start the video in the train yard at Gouda Goverwelle. About 20 minutes ago we arrived at this track coming from Den Haag CS. We shut down the train on the other side and made it ready for departure on this side of the train. As soon as our signal gives us a yellow light we give a little traction and speed up to 40km/h. The shunting of the train happens in two movements. The first is to make this tracks free for the sprinter train waiting at the platform in Goverwelle. Then we have to wait for about a minute because the first intercity to Gouda needs to pass us. Now you think, why just don’t wait a little longer then? Well, that is because there’s another intercity right behind the other one that needs to pass on the other track we’re crossing in our first shunt movement. As soon as we have finished the first part the second intercity train can get a green light as soon as we’ve crossed its track. Still following what I say? After the first intercity has passed us by we get to run our train to the platform in Goverwelle. Ready for a brand new ride to the big city. At 14.05 we depart perfectly timed from our starting point and we keep it like this all the way to our final stop. First stop: Gouda. On the left you can still see the second intercity service that was passing by in Goverwelle. The first intercity service has already left and was just before us at the same tracks as we arrive one. On the right you can see our R-NET FLIRT. This is still business for NS but they’re active under our daughter company ABELLIO. These train don’t have train managers on board, only a train driver. Train manager were too expansive for the line. Otherwise one of our competitors would’ve won the contract. After a short stop we continue to Zoetermeer Oost. We must keep the traction on the engines for a long time there because there’s not much time to arrive on our net stop. Only 9 minutes and 18 seconds to be exact. On our way to Gouda you have about 30 seconds extra, which can make a huge difference. But still we can turn of the engines for a few kilometers on our way to Zoetermeer. And of course we’re on time as we arrive. The signal in Zoetermeer is red because of the railroad crossing. As soon as it’s fully closed the signal gives us the green light again. When you’re traveling with an intercity service this signal will already show a green light. Also then the rail crossing is still opened. As soon as the intercity approaches the railroad crossing will close so the train can pass by on full speed (130km/h for this particular track). So only with sprinter trains the crossing will be closed until the train has been brought to a full stop. After this we have Zoetermeer (a few hundred meter ahead). There you'll see another sprinter approach. The coal strip of the pantograph on this train is very thin and that is why we make a call with the signal man so he can inform the train driver. When you get a call like that you check the pantograph yourself on the next stop and most of the time change to the other pantograph on the roof of the train, which should be brand new. For the rest of the ride we have Den Haag Ypenburg where you can see the other tracks coming from our workshop in Leidschendam.
