Ultrafast Magnetism and Cold Magnetic Recording at the edge of time

Such studies are fundamentally intriguing, as they concern with basic concepts of matter, such as exchange and spin-orbit coupling. On the other hand, the possibility of ultrafast magnetization reversal may lead to a development of high-speed magnetic recording devices and novel magnetic memories. We are inspired by our recent discovery which reveals novel way for magnetization reversal at the fastest possible time scale and with nearly no heat. In particular, we have shown that using an ultrashort laser pulse instead of an electromagnet we can record information 50 times faster, while dissipating 5 million times less energy per bit than in state-of the-art hard disk drive.
