Located in Portugal in the municipality of Apiarça, on the banks of the Tagus, the stilt village of Patacão is the last genuine testimony of the Tagus' avian fishermen. Abandoned about 20 years ago, this village of wooden huts still resists, despite the onslaught of the weather and the overwhelming wave of vegetation that had almost swallowed it. Memories of a time away... The fishing families, so well portrayed by Alves Redol in his novel AVIEIROS They inhabited the banks of the Tagus between Vila Franca de Xira and Constância from the end of the 19th century until the 80s of the 20th century. Coming from the dangerous fishing labor of the homeless coasts of the Atlantic, these fishermen found a less harsh way of survival in the Tagus. Initially, they made their own home out of their boats, which they sheltered at night under the branches of the willow trees. Later, they settled on the banks, in wooden shacks supported on pillars, which allowed them to resist the frequent "floods" of the Tagus that flooded the banks and spread into an immense lake across the fields between Golegã and Santarém. Little remains of these aviaries today, other than the memory of the places where they lived and the testimonies that have been collected by many researchers, in a movement tending to propose Avieira Culture as a National Heritage Site.
