Hi Everyone! My name is Dan, and I am a veterinarian. Today I am talking about how your vet will diagnose a UTI or bladder infection in your dog. A UTI: Urinary Tract Infection or Urinary Bladder Infection is very common in the dog. A UTI or Bladder Infection means that your dog has a bacterial infection in their bladder. This can cause your dog to urinate more frequently, possibly urinate in the house, not empty his or her bladder completely, or have abnormal urine that is a different color or possibly even bloody. The first thing a veterinarian will need is a urine sample. In most cases the veterinarian will get the urine sample at the veterinary clinic. This urine sample will then go through the urine analysis machine. The urine analysis machine will examine the urine and even take pictures of the urine. The urinalysis machine will pickup infection and it will also pick up urinary crystals and a large number of other urinary problems. Once diagnosed, the veterinarian will pick the best antibiotic to treat the infection. If the UTI does not resolve or it returns, a recheck will be need and a urinary culture and imaging (radiograph or ultrasound) may be needed.
