This documentary focuses on the unlawful fishing of young tilapia in Kalokol, the Fergusson Gulf of L. Turkana, Turkana County, Northern Kenya. The Kalokol community relies heavily on illegal fishing and smuggling of undersized tilapia to the Eastern Democratic Republic of the Congo via Uganda and Tanzania. Fishing endangers the existence of the entire tilapia species in Lake Turkana, the world's largest arid and alkaline lake. Immature fish are transported from Lake Turkana to Lubumbashi and Kasai in the Democratic Republic of the Congo, where they are highly valued as delicacies. Cartels, the local administration, security forces, Congolese nationals, and the local community are all active participants in this criminal operation. Children as young as five years old are forced to participate in this activity. Evidence estimates that 7 to 10 million undersized tilapias are smuggled into the DRC each week, generating earnings of up to $5 million per year. These practices pose long-term dangers to the Kalokol community's food and livelihood security, degrade biodiversity, and violate local and international law. The situation highlights the deep-seated national community ignorance of environmental concerns and their consequences, as seen by quick and simple access to licenses allowing the commission of such environmental crimes.
