(30 Jan 2026) RESTRICTION SUMMARY: ++QUALITY AT SOURCE++ POOL Fairfax, Virginia – 30 January 2026 1. Mid of Brendan Banfield walking into the courtroom for closing arguments 2. SOUNDBITE (English) Jenna Sands, Chief Deputy Commonwealth’s Attorney: "They created accounts, they chatted up potential victims. They got Joe Ryan into the house and then they shot him. Brendan stabbed Christine. Let her bleed out on the floor and then dripped, smeared, and wiped her blood on Joseph Ryan's body to make it look like he had attacked Christine." 3. SOUNDBITE (English) John Carroll, Defense Attorney: "Brendan's DNA is not on the knife. That's also supported by those same forensics, reports. He doesn't have any injuries to his hands. That was confirmed by EMTs (emergency medical technicians)." ++WHITE FLASH++ 4. SOUNDBITE (English) John Carroll, Defense Attorney: ++PARTIALLY COVERED BY SHOT 5++ "And it was only after he was told that his wife had died, and the emotions that come from that where he was blowing his nose and wiping his eyes and doing all those things, it was offered for him to wash his hands. But that appears to be some sort of a horrible thing that this officer allowed him to do and it was even an insinuation that my client was trying to cover something up. This was 45 minutes later." 5. Mid of Brendan Banfield in the courtroom during closing arguments 6. SOUNDBITE (English) John Carroll, Defense Attorney: "The police witnesses who are more objective than the expert witness for the Commonwealth all say he was rendering aid." 7. SOUNDBITE (English) John Carroll, Defense Attorney: "Juliana made it up. She told the Commonwealth what they wanted to hear. And without question they just took it as their story." 8. SOUNDBITE (English) Jenna Sands, Chief Deputy Commonwealth’s Attorney: "So you gotta pick one, Juliana, Mr. Banfield. Whose story does the evidence support? All of that blood. The DNA. To some extent, the digital forensics. The physical evidence collected at the scene. That's what you can rely on." 9. Mid of Brendan Banfield in the courtroom at the end of closing arguments STORYLINE: Jurors began deliberating on Friday afternoon on double murder charges faced by a Virginia man accused of plotting with the family's Brazilian au pair to kill his wife and pin the death on a stranger. In closing arguments, Chief Deputy Commonwealth’s Attorney Jenna Sands reiterated the prosecution's theory that Brendan Banfield and Juliana Magalhães, who were having an affair, lured Joe Ryan to the house on the morning of Feb. 24, 2023. The two then shot him, staging the scene to look as if Ryan had been a predator stabbing Christine Banfield, she said. Magalhães, their key witness, said in court that she and Banfield had created an account in Christine Banfield’s name on a social media platform for people interested in sexual fetishes. There, Ryan connected with the account, and the users made plans to meet for a sexual encounter involving a knife. In testimony, Magalhães described Banfield’s plan to kill his wife and spend the rest of his days with her. She spoke of the months Banfield, a former IRS law enforcement officer, had spent plotting and the steps he took to manufacture their alibis. In closing arguments, Sands told jurors they don't have to take Magalhães’ word for what happened because there is a “plethora of evidence” to back it up. Among other things, she pointed to expert testimony that concluded certain blood stains on Ryan’s hands indicated that Christine Banfield’s blood had been dripped onto him from above.
