The Faroe Islands, in addition to their spectacular landscapes, have sustained their own distinctive breed of horses for at least 1500 years. The history is not well known or exact, but it is believed they were imported as work horses and then left to their own devices in the wild without any human caregiving when they were not being used. This led to the numbers of the population rising and falling over hundreds of years, finally peaking at 800 in the 1800's and subsequently plunging to a mere 5 individuals. In the 1970s the Faroese Horse Association was formed, and action was taken by both the organization and other interested people to try to preserve these horses. Due to a general lack of concern in the Faroese communities toward preservation of the breed combined with the expense of caring for these horses, there have been some creative decisions made. Signa Kallsoy Joensen, who is chairperson of the Faroese Horse Association, speaks about their Embryo Transfer Project, importing Icelandic horses as surrogates for Faroese mares. Faroese horse breeders Anna Louisa Joensen and Roar Heini Olsen have been caring for many of the horses, particularly the stallions for decades on land donated by fellow breeder Jákup Christian Bærentsen, along with coming up with alternate ways of fundraising for their feeding. The story is one of hope for the Faroese horse breed and the dedication of these and other individuals to preserve and protect them.
