Kathy Wingert http://www.wingertguitars.com/ always brings something spectacular to the Healdsburg Guitar Festival but she may have outdone herself this year. Her "Black and Tan" harp guitar was one of the standouts of the festival and her two "steampunk influenced" six stringers had everyone talking about her creativity and artistry. I captured shots of her display in my video from the festival, over on the Homebrewed Music channel: • Healdsburg Guitar Festival 2013 On her way home from the festival Kathy and her inlay artist daughter Jimmi http://www.jimmiwingertinlay.com/ stopped in Walnut Creek for a visit. Happy days, that gave me a chance to play a tune and shoot a little video using Kathy's koa Steampunk Model F. Since steampunk http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Steampunk is a movement that takes inspiration from the turn of the 19th to the 20th century, I thought I should pull out an old old song, and what better than "Silver Threads Among the Gold," http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Silver_T... a mainland classic from the late 1800s brought into the slack key repertoire by Leonard Kwan. As I hope you can hear, this guitar is definitely not just for show, it's a stunning musical instrument with spectacular dynamic range and an inspiring voice. It's constructed of some eye-popping flamed koa for the back and sides and a lovely German spruce top. All of Kathy's guitars are built from premium materials and this one carries on the tradition. I recorded the audio for this clip with my new Zoom H6 using its XY module, it made setup quick and easy and I think the result does the song justice. I used a Panasonic Lumix GH3 for the opening shot, a GH2 for the "old film" shot, and Kathy handheld a Sanyo Xacti HD2000 for the moving shots. All editing in Edius 6.5.
